- Investment in the future of healthcare in the Rhine-Main region and beyond
- Helios HSK as an example of medical excellence and high-quality results throughout the entire patient journey
- Boris Rhein: "strong signal of the innovative power of Hessian companies and the strength of our economy"
Fresenius is continuing to develop its Care Provision Platform, of which Helios Germany is a core part: with the recently completed construction of Helios HSK’s new building in Wiesbaden, the company has opened one of Germany's most modern hospitals. Helios HSK is the core of the Wiesbaden-Taunus hospital cluster and is home to 25 specialist clinics and five institutes. At a launch ceremony today, around 400 guests from the worlds of politics, business and medicine paid tribute to the new building. In addition to the Prime Minister of the State of Hesse, Boris Rhein, dignitaries included the Hessian Minister of Health Diana Stolz, and Wiesbaden's Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.
Boris Rhein, Prime Minister of the State of Hesse: "All the employees of Helios HSK have done a great job of moving to the new clinic building while maintaining ongoing operations. Under challenging conditions, they have impressively demonstrated that patients are in the best of hands here. With this new building, our state capital has gained a maximum-care clinic and the most modern large hospital in Germany, featuring 25 specialist clinics, five institutes, and almost 900 beds. This also sends a strong signal of the innovative power of Hessian companies and the strength of our economy. With the opening ceremony, we are beginning a new chapter in healthcare in Hesse. On behalf of the Hessian state government, I would like to thank everyone involved and wish Helios HSK continued success."
Michael Sen, Fresenius CEO: "The new Helios HSK is a maximum care provider, delivering cutting-edge diagnostics and therapies using the latest technologies. Every day, our colleagues work tirelessly for patient wellbeing, embodying Fresenius’ promise: 'Committed to Life'. Medical progress is advancing more rapidly than at any time in history. From Artificial Intelligence, robotics and digital technologies to breakthroughs in genetic and cell research: today, therapies of a quality once unimaginable are now a reality. As a leading therapy-focused company, our mission is to make these advances available to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible."
Robert Möller, Member of the Fresenius Management Board and Helios CEO: "Top-notch medical care, high-quality treatment outcomes, and patient satisfaction are key to our success. Building a hospital from the ground up allowed us to design it with the latest medical and nursing knowledge, focusing entirely on patient needs. This has been achieved brilliantly here in Wiesbaden. My heartfelt thanks go to all the employees who brought this mammoth project to life. This new clinic will have a great impact beyond Wiesbaden and stands as one of the most modern medical workplaces in Germany."
Diana Stolz, Hessian Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Sports, Health and Care: "As the Hessian Minister for Family Affairs and Health, I would like to draw particular attention to the fact that this new building has established the most modern care facilities for maternity, pediatric, and adolescent medicine. Now, all essential services – including obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric intensive care, and the children's hospital – are integrated under one roof and in close proximity. With this new building, we have empowered HSK, as a maximum-care provider, to keep pace with rapid medical advancements, to treat complex illnesses and injuries, to adapt its medical operations to these advances and changes, and to optimize its organization and operational procedures. Our guiding principle remains to deliver high-quality patient care across Hesse."
Investment in patient-centered care and state-of-the-art equipment
At Helios HSK, optimal treatment paths, the latest therapies and equipment with state-of-the-art medical technology enable cutting-edge medicine at a new level of treatment. Patients are welcomed into a hospital designed entirely around their needs from the ground up. Employees benefit from an attractive, state-of-the-art work environment that enables them to focus even more on patient care.
Among other things, Helios HSK is certified as an oncology center with ten certified organ centers and as a supra-regional trauma center. Around 170,000 patients per year can be treated in the seven-storey building with around 900 beds and around 3,000 employees.
The clinic's highlights include 22 surgery rooms, most of which have natural daylight, two intensive care units, a helicopter roof landing pad, a special stroke ward and an emergency room with access to cutting-edge technology. These include a special spectral computer tomograph supported by Artificial Intelligence. Only a few meters separate the arrival hall for ambulances from the shock room and other life-saving areas.
An entire wing of the hospital also houses a modern parent-child center with six delivery rooms, an intensive care unit for premature babies, and its own emergency surgery room. Short distances here too: everything is on one level and all experts for the care of the youngest children work together within easy reach.
The new Helios HSK building marks Fresenius' largest hospital investment project to date. The company financed the majority of the over 300 million euro investment from its own funds, with the state of Hesse contributing around 68 million euros.

- Leipzig Heart Center is a pioneer in minimally-invasive heart surgery, interventional cardiology, and electrophysiology
- Representatives from the political sphere, research community, and hospital commend the center’s achievements
- Fresenius is focusing on its medical cluster and specialization strategy with the Care Provision Platform
The internationally renowned Fresenius Helios heart center in Leipzig is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. Representatives from the political sphere, research community, and hospital have commended the heart center and its history of cutting-edge medicine at the Helios hospital in Leipzig. Further guests beside the Saxon Minister-President included Leipzig’s Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung and the Rector of Leipzig University, Professor Eva Inés Obergfell.
Robert Möller, Fresenius Management Board member and Helios CEO:
“The Fresenius promise of ‘Committed to Life’ also brings a responsibility with it. We not only save lives, but also improve both the quality of people’s lives and their health. We provide access to affordable, innovative medicine of the highest quality. All of this is impressively demonstrated here at the heart center. I am delighted that we are today considered a cornerstone of the medical infrastructure here in Leipzig and the wider region, and cooperate with Leipzig University in the areas of pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiology. This in turn enables us to drive future-oriented projects in both clinical and research fields. It is a success story of a trusting cooperation on an equal footing with Leipzig University and the Free State of Saxony. In its 30-year history, the Leipzig Heart Center has been involved in state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and a variety of research initiatives that extend far beyond national borders and earned itself a global reputation.”
Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony:
“Leipzig Heart Center has stood for cutting-edge medicine and medical innovation for 30 years now. Patients of all ages know that they will receive first-class care for their heart problems here. Other hospitals in the region can also rely on the specialist knowledge of the experts in Leipzig. This makes the heart center an important cornerstone of medical care in our region. The Free State of Saxony will continue to support the heart center in the future. It is investing in the renovation and expansion of pediatric cardiology as well as in digitalization so that people can continue to receive the highest level of care.”
Cutting-edge medicine making history
The Leipzig Heart Center has achieved countless milestones over the past 30 years: Doctors and nurses have used state-of-the-art technology to so far perform over 100,000 heart operations, more than 270,000 cardiac catheterizations, and 100,000 ablations, helping to improve the lives of around 500,000 patients. Particularly worthy of mention here are the advances in minimally-invasive heart surgery, interventional cardiology, and electrophysiology, which have made the Leipzig Heart Center a pioneer in its field.
The manifold scientific and clinical achievements mean that Leipzig Heart Center is a leader in many specialist areas – it has the world’s largest heart valve clinic, for example. The cardiology and cardiac surgery departments are among the largest specialist university departments in Germany. The department of pediatric cardiology is the only heart center specifically for children in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Today, more than 1,450 employees from 50 nations and countless specialized medical fields devote themselves to heart health here.

- Best practice for pooling medical expertise
- Germany-wide centers of excellence for complex treatments
- Clear focus on the quality of medical outcomes and patient satisfaction
The hospital system of the future already exists today: On Tuesday, the German Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach and the Parliamentary State Secretary for East Germany and Minister of State Carsten Schneider visited the Helios Hospital Erfurt. Together with three other Helios hospitals, it forms part of the Central Thuringia Helios cluster. Accompanied by Robert Möller, who is the CEO of Helios and a Fresenius Management Board member, the health minister learned about the networking between Helios hospitals and the specialization based on the cluster principle. The minister also took the opportunity to speak directly with employees.
Helios sets focus areas for its clusters comprising several closely linked hospitals that it has set up all across Germany. These clusters enable the provision of a very broad range of medical services, which in turn leads to a measurably higher quality of treatment for patients.
Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach, German Federal Minister of Health: “All those who work together in a hospital network, specialize, and allocate tasks sensibly like the Helios Hospital Erfurt and its partner hospitals do stand to benefit from the hospital reform. Not everyone has to do everything. But anyone who carries out complex procedures must be qualified to do so. Cutting-edge medicine must pay off. Nationwide coverage must continue to be guaranteed. We will ensure just this with the reform.”
Robert Möller, member of the Fresenius Management Board and CEO of Helios: “As a healthcare provider and part of the globally active Fresenius healthcare group, Helios welcomes many of the approaches foreseen in the hospital reform, especially the efforts to establish focus areas and centers of excellence. Like the one here at Helios in Thuringia. One thing is clear though: Our focus here in Germany must be on the quality of medical outcomes and patient satisfaction. To achieve this, we must concentrate treatment in the places with the most expertise and think beyond sector boundaries. At Helios, we have consistently pursued this approach for a long time now. Always with the aim of achieving the best possible medical quality, which is also measurable. The Central Thuringia cluster of Helios hospitals is a very good example of how we are putting this into practice in many regions in Germany.”
Medical care within the cluster
As a maximum care provider, the Helios Hospital Erfurt is the largest hospital in the region. It forms the core of the Central Thuringia Helios cluster. Together with three other Helios hospitals in the surrounding area, namely the specialist orthopedic clinic in Bleicherode, the hospital for specialized care in Gotha, and the hospital for basic and standard care in Blankenhain, the cluster is an example of specialization and networking in the hospital sector. Around 300,000 people are treated within the cluster every year. The specialized medical care is provided by over 3,500 employees. Helios already has 25 strong clusters. Within these, complex treatments are pooled at centers of excellence and cross-site medical departments are formed.
Insights into daily practice
The practical work at the hospitals in the Central Thuringia Helios cluster was presented to the delegation and the close networking between sites and the specialization through the establishment of centers for different specialist areas and disciplines were also demonstrated. During his tour, the health minister experienced telemedical cooperation in a live case discussion and training for complex emergencies and in the use of state-of-the-art robotics for knee surgery in the simulation and emergency academy. The medical training program offered in Erfurt was also presented. Helios Hospital Erfurt has been a university campus of the Health and Medical University since 2022 and plays a key role in the medical training offered in Erfurt. The health minister also expressed his particular appreciation for the staff from various disciplines during personal discussions.

Fresenius Helios will be linking digitalization even more closely with its core activities in inpatient and outpatient healthcare. The company will strengthen areas such as the digitalization of clinical processes and clinical decision making, for example through the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Furthermore, a Digital Innovation Officer within the German Helios organization will explore innovative directions in digitalization. The implementation of digitalization processes and solutions will be the core task of the newly created function of the Head of Transformation Management at Helios. Also Quirónsalud in Spain is successfully driving forward the expansion of its leading digital processes.
In this context, Fresenius Helios will discontinue the activities of Curalie, which specializes in health apps, from the end of 2023. The Curalie subsidiaries meditec and ibs will be sold. Respective binding agreements have been signed. The business operations of the parent company Curalie GmbH and its other subsidiaries will be discontinued. The measures are in line with #FutureFresenius' intention to further focus business activities and reduce complexity.
